Get Ready

How do you prepare for big opportunities? In what ways do you look towards the ‘big moment’? In the parable of the Ten Virgins, we see how Matthew emphasises the importance of getting ready and responding to God’s call.

‘At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.’ Matthew 25:1-5

This parable is not about people who have rejected God at the end of time. This is about urgency, readiness and how we spend our time in a season of preparation. Jesus is with us now and he calls us to be discipled by His Word and not the culture we live in. He calls us to get ready for the calling He has placed in our lives. Later in this parable, we read the consequences of not getting ready and being prepared for God.

‘But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.’

When we postpone our call to action for obedience and are not readily prepared for God’s calling, we can miss our moment. As the foolish virgins delayed the instruction to get ready, they were unable to benefit from all God had in store for them. To put it plainly, the wise live in the now but the door closes on the foolish.

How will you be more prepared this week?

In what ways will you get ready and respond to God’s calling?
